For the first day of Black History Month, we want to spotlight Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller. Born in 1872, Dr. Fuller made groundbreaking contributions as the first African American psychiatrist and a pioneering force in Alzheimer’s disease research. His talents extended far beyond psychiatry—he worked as a research assistant for Alois Alzheimer and played a crucial role in translating Alzheimer’s pivotal work into English. Dr. Fuller also reported the ninth case of Alzheimer’s disease, which has since become the first comprehensive review of the disease. Despite his monumental contributions, his work has not been as widely recognized as it should be.
