Using a plunger for manual therapy sounds ridiculous… until you actually understand what you’re trying to accomplish.
Manual therapy isn’t about the tool, it’s about the force you create and how you deliver it.
A plunger is just a way to create suction, control direction, and give you leverage. And leverage is everything.
If you’ve ever worked on someone bigger, stronger, or harder to move, you already know this. You’re not just using your hands, you’re using your body, your positioning, and whatever tools help you apply force more efficiently.
I’m smaller than a lot of the NBA guys I work with. If I tried to rely on just my hands, I’d lose every time. So I use angles, body weight, and yes… sometimes unconventional tools… to create the input I actually want.
At the end of the day, we’re all doing the same thing:
applying a controlled mechanical input to influence tissue behavior.
The method might look different.
The intent should not.
