Nearly 20 of Frida Kahlo’s works will be exported to Spain this summer under an agreement between the Mexican government and Spain’s Banco Santander, sparking backlash from Mexico’s art world. The works will be displayed at the bank’s new Museo Faro Santander, and after the center’s director suggested that they would have “a permanent presence there,” nearly 400 Mexican artists, curators, and historians published an open letter to the Mexican government asking for more clarity on when they will return to Mexico. Currently, Frida Kahlo’s works are on public display in Mexico City as part of the Gelman collection for the first time in almost 20 years.
