I quit piano after this happened👇 My senior year of highschool, I was competing in my 10th year of classical piano competitions. I was so nervous. I really wanted to make my teacher proud. I start playing exactly how I practiced it… …and then my brain goes: “what if we ✨jazz it up✨ a little?” Mid-performance. I just start improvising like I’m the main character in a movie. Once I realized what was happening, I froze. I got a terrible score, and was devastated. It felt like my whole “classical piano identity” was going up in flames. It just felt like whenever the REAL me came through (the love to compose and improvise) it ruined everything. Look I get it, I should’ve gotten a bad score, I didn’t play the piece correctly. But it felt like so much more than that. So, after 12 years of classical training, I quit. If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t fit the mold… maybe you’re not supposed to.
