In Autism Spectrum Disorder, elopement means leaving a safe or supervised place without telling anyone, often quickly and without awareness of danger. It can looks like running out of the house, wandering away in public or just simply slipping away from a caregiver. It usually happens because the autistic person is trying to get to something they want (water, a favourite place or even something that caught their eye) or it can be because they are overwhelmed and trying to escape and are not fully aware of the safety risks. Which is why elopement is considered a safety issue and not bad behavior. #elopement #elope #autismacceptance #autismeducation #autismsafety
