Trauma doesn’t always show up in obvious ways. Sometimes a person is still going to work, still answering messages, still looking after other people, and still doing everything they need to do. From the outside, they may seem completely fine. But trauma can run much deeper than people realize. I’ve seen this in patients, in colleagues, and in the people we support through our trauma-informed mental health work. Someone can look functional on the surface while quietly struggling with poor sleep, feeling constantly on edge, shutting down emotionally, reacting in ways they don’t fully understand, or finding that old patterns keep showing up in their relationships and daily life. That’s part of what makes trauma so easy to miss. People often expect it to look dramatic, but very often it settles into the body and nervous system in quieter ways.
