How is the American Revolution and St. Augustine connected? As the Continental Army (formed to protect the original 13 colonies) was pushing further south, the British Loyalists knew their time was short. They loaded up ships with their most prized possessions and fled from Charleston, South Carolina. Some of the ships tried seeking refuge in St. Augustine, Florida, but failed to navigate the inlet and 16 ships were lost on the sand bar around December, 31, 1782. ⚓️ In 2011, Lighthouse Archeologists recovered artifacts from one of those shipwrecks, which included the 2nd oldest carronade (Short Large-Caliber Cannon) known to exist!
