As a Bengali-Lucknowite who is Born and Raised in Pune and speaks Marathi, I believe everyone should try to learn the local language. But using violence or hate against fellow Indians who don’t speak Marathi isn’t just wrong; it’s anti-national. We sing the national anthem that unites every corner of India, yet some break a Bihari shopkeeper’s livelihood because he can’t speak Marathi. Divisions—by language, religion, skin color—are all too human, but it’s deeply painful when basic humanity is lost for political gain. Instead of attacking outsiders, why not welcome them? Let’s start “Marathi-speaking” initiatives to teach newcomers, and choose unity over hate.
