🏳️‍🌈 In the early morning of June 28th, 1969, eight officers raided the Stonewall Inn, an LGBT bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Raids on gay bars were common at this time, as the Public Morals Division enforced many laws such as gambling, prostitution, and homosexuality— even going as far as arresting and hospitalizing gay people. Patrons decided to fight back and protested for six straight days. The fight for gay rights didn’t begin at Stonewall, but it marked the beginning of the gay liberation movement. On the one-year anniversary of Stonewall in 1970— thousands marched in Manhattan from Stonewall to Central Park for “Christopher Street Liberation Day”, America’s first gay pride parade. The parade’s signature chant was “say it loud, gay is proud” President Barack Obama marked Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park, and surrounding areas, a national monument to recognize the contribution of the area to gay rights.
