After Hurricane Helene in 2024, outsiders rushed in to offer help and posted rescue videos on social media. Some of their videos made unsubstantiated, negative claims about the government rescue efforts. Sheriff Lowell Griffin says some posts falsely claimed people were still stranded, bodies were floating in the river, and FEMA was seizing supplies. “None of that was true,” says Griffin. Griffin urges the public to rely on official sources during emergencies, warning that misinformation can hinder rescue efforts. #naturaldisaster #investigativereporting #disasterresponse #misinformation
