You might remember that, as part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, we recently asked you to vote for your favourite International Booker Prize winner from the past decade. We can now reveal that, with just under 10,000 votes cast, The Vegetarian has came out on top, with almost a third of the votes. Written by Han Kang and translated from Korean into English by Deborah Smith, The Vegetarian won the International Booker Prize in 2016, the first year of the prize in its current form. That year’s judges described it as a book that had an ‘uncanny blend of beauty and horror at every turn’ and that it ‘will linger long in the minds, and maybe the dreams, of its readers’. To keep the celebration going, we’re hosting a special, one-off event at London’s Southbank Centre on Friday 8 May 2026.
