#USOC2026: coloradorapids and Switchbacksfc met in the I-25 derby for the first time in 10 years. A back-and-forth game went to extra time and then penalties to decide the winner. The Colorado Rapids prevailed after 7 rounds of penalty kicks and advance to the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals for the first time in two decades.
Early on in the match the Switchbacks looked like the better side, dominating the Rapids at points in the first half. The Rapids got their break when Rafael Navarro scored from inside the box in the 25th minute. Eight minutes later the Switchbacks struck back with Brennan Creek scoring after a corner kick.
The remainder of the game was a physical and chippy affair with the referee handing out nine yellow cards and a red card. The match went into the second half of extra time tied at 1-1.
