In 2001, over 600 American companies lobbied to let China into the WTO. GM, IBM, Boeing, Caterpillar. They wanted cheap labour and market access. They got it.
The assumption was that trade would liberalise China politically.
What they got instead: BYD competing with Tesla. Huawei competing with Qualcomm. DeepSeek competing with OpenAI.
America didn’t lose ground because China cheated. It lost ground because 600 corporations decided cheap manufacturing was worth more than industrial sovereignty.
The bill is arriving.
