The Yankees don’t usually keep prospects down at AAA for long anymore, and if GLJ is awesome, there’s a world we see him at some point. The number of times I did some hand-wringing at someone for saying the Yankees should call him up, too—my bad, hah 😆
It makes sense, too, because the guys above Lombard are Ryan McMahon and Anthony Volpe. Neither has ever had an above-average season at the plate statistically. If Volpe’s glove is as bad as it was last year, and McMahon’s defense continues to be underwhelming, Lombard may end up being the best option at short or third. Especially since whatever trade assets they have should be going to the bullpen.
I don’t love having a 20-year-old up with the big club, but if they’re already getting nothing from those two, if he struggles offensively, the silver lining is we know his glove will play. At least, that’s what people smarter than me are saying.
