Children facing abuse and neglect sometimes try to hide it. They may want to protect their parents and try to feel like a normal kid. Fortunately in some cases, children simply can’t conceal what’s going on at home.
“Everly” (9) and “Mila” (6) came to the attention of the authorities when it was reported that classmates refused to sit by the girls because of how they smelled. The school district tried to support the family by providing resources, like new clothes and laundry detergent. However, during an unannounced visit to their home, a social worker discovered the house covered in trash and dog feces. An investigation found that the girls would ask neighbors for food on nights and weekends when school was closed. When their living conditions didn’t improve, the sisters entered foster care.
