After devastating floods impacted parts of Burundi in January of 2024, local churches and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries volunteers stepped in to provide thousands of people with food, emergency supplies, tents, bedding, and clean water. After the distributions, response efforts turned to one struggling community, where most families live in poverty. The stagnant waters that filled the community after the flood—and destroyed sanitary facilities—raised the risk of diseases like malaria and cholera. Standing water made the health center inaccessible, and residents often used buckets for their sanitary needs and contaminated water for cooking or washing. To help community members avoid illness, volunteers led awareness sessions that helped 45 volunteers learn how to teach others to avoid cholera and other waterborne diseases through practicing hand-washing and other hygiene practices.
