During the Battle of the Coral Sea (May 4–8, 1942), U.S. and Allied naval forces confronted Japan’s expanding offensive in the Pacific in the first major fleet action between the two nations.  Fought entirely by carrier-based aircraft during the Battle of the Coral Sea, the battle resulted in the sinking of USS Lexington (CV-2), while Japanese forces lost the light carrier Shōhō and suffered significant damage to Shōkaku. Although tactically favoring Japan, the engagement proved a strategic turning point by halting the advance toward Port Moresby, protecting supply lines to Australia, and reducing Japanese carrier strength ahead of Midway. It also marked the first naval battle in history in which opposing ships never sighted one another.
