Welcome to the Hall-of-Fame, Ichiro. The most successful photographs tell a story, and this frame, 1/1000th of a second frozen in time, shows you Ichiro’s incredible athleticism as well as the passionate fervor of the fans who would show up every night awaiting the next feat of baseball magic he would conjure up. Like on this night, when he scaled the outfield wall like Spider-Man to rob some poor batter of a home run. When I started as a young sports photographer, a crusty old editor once told me that to have a successful sports photo, I needed “two faces and a ball, kid, two faces and a ball”. This photo has no ball, but does feature around 40 faces, all of which provide a storytelling study in the passion of fans and sport. It’s one of my all-time favorite images I was lucky enough to capture while photographing his playing days in Seattle.
