Listen in. Go behind the scenes of the making of "Hyundai Terrace Commission: Kelly Akashi.“
After the loss of the artist's home and studio in Altadena, a chimney was the only structure left standing. Working in close collaboration with a mason, Akashi recreated what remained and lingered—brick by brick, in luminous glass—and brings it to the Whitney museum’s fifth-floor terrace.
Carried from Los Angeles to New York, “Hyundai Terrace Commission: Kelly Akashi” transforms the site into a meditation on resilience, rupture, and the fragility of permanence.
On view now through August 23, 2026.
