Now on view: “What it is, what it has been” is a monumental sculpture deriving its form from the statue of Jose Marti, a revolutionary leader in the struggle for Cuban independence from the Spanish Empire, in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolucion (renamed from Plaza Civica in 1961). This contemporary sculpture is the result of taking a full sized replica of the head of the statue and applying 365 successive layers of paint. The consecutive “retouching” of the model indirectly symbolizes the erosion of political ideals over time. The sculpture won the Pommery Prize champagnepommery at the Armory Show thearmoryshow in 2022.
