For the pilot of a Star Wars X-wing fighter, the answer was simple: leave it to an onboard "astromech droid," like R2-D2. Astromech droids can fix mechanical problems, override computer glitches, navigate, and more. R2-D2 communicated by whistling and beeping. That made it easy for Star Wars characters — and viewers — to bond with the mechanical company.
