Ibraheem Yazeed, 36, was sentenced to life in prison in the 2019 shooting death of 19-year-old Aniah Blanchard. A jury convicted Yazeed of felony murder and murder in March. He was sentenced to two life terms with the possibility of parole. Blanchard, a Southern Union College student from Homewood, was reported missing in October 2019. The vehicle she was last seen in was recovered. Her cell phone never was. The case drew national attention and led to state laws expanding the list of criminal offenses ineligible for bail, such as Aniah’s Law in Alabama. Aniah’s mother, Angela Haley Harris, launched Aniah’s Heart to teach young people about safety and says her advocacy isn’t stopping.
