That all changed in December 1997 when Vince McMahon went on Raw a month after the Montreal Screwjob and publicly admitted wrestling was scripted, redefining the company as "sports entertainment." He told viewers fans were "tired of having their intelligence insulted." Within a year, backstage vignettes, in-ring conversations between wrestlers, routine attacks in multiple matches per show became the norm.
