The Berkeley City Council renewed an automated license plate readers contract with Flock Safety on Thursday while rejecting a proposed expanded Flock system of fixed cameras, community video systems, first responder drones and criminal investigations software. “It’s not ready for our city yet,” said Berkeley Mayor Adena Ishii. “I don’t have full confidence in (the) company, and I can’t support something that I just really don’t trust.” The city manager will submit the proposed surveillance technology expansions to a competitive bidding process, meaning the city will consider other vendors. “When you are an elected official, you don’t have the luxury of just listening to who has the time to come to the meeting in person,” said District 1 Councilmember Rashi Kesarwani in support of Flock.
