For more than a month, Cameron Cooley's music teacher at Moore Elementary has spent 15 minutes before school each Tuesday showing the fifth-grader where to place his hands on the keyboard and other beginner piano skills. After school, it's not unusual for Cameron's mother, Brittany Cooley, to chat with the school's physical education teacher about how her three kids are doing in class. She and other Des Moines Public Schools' families worry those close-knit relationships will change next school year when 40 art, music and physical education teachers from 13 elementary schools with low enrollment are reassigned or posted at more than one school to bring staffing in line with student numbers.
