May 3rd is World Press Freedom Day, a United Nations observance to promote the ideals of having a free press and media worldwide. While we might take for granted having a free press, that freedom is not extended in many countries. For today, Jared letterpress printed a phrase in 60 point Caslon font. This phrase has a few variations and a number of people are credited with coining the phrase. The phrase is “Freedom of the press is assured to the person who owns one.” Nevertheless, this phrase still upholds today, but is well beyond possessing a printing press. The print includes an image of a wooden common press from the late 1600s.
