Today, May 5, is Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness and Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+). This day is a time for ceremony, mourning, remembrance and advocacy, and a reminder of the ongoing impacts of colonial violence and the urgent need for continued action. On this day, we wear red to honour Indigenous women, girls, trans and Two-Spirit people whose lives have been lost. The red dress serves as a powerful and visual symbol, representing those who are missing or have been murdered, and reminding us of the work still needed to advance safety, justice and healing. To mark the day, we have installed a Red Dress Day display at our Grocery Foundation Resource Centre (library).
