A recent excavation update from the Burke Museum revealed something incredible hidden inside a hadrosaur skeleton: ossified tendons — tendons that gradually mineralized and hardened into bone-like structures over the dinosaur’s lifetime.
These aren’t random fossil fragments. They’re part of a highly organized biological support system that helped stabilize massive dinosaur tails over 66–75 million years ago.
Hadrosaurs (“duck-billed dinosaurs”) are especially famous for these structures. In many species, paleontologists find long rod-like tendons arranged in a crisscross lattice along the tail and back. This pattern likely acted like an internal engineering framework — similar to reinforced steel bars (“rebar”) inside concrete.
