The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office says a sophisticated cargo theft crew tied to a transnational cartel may be behind multiple high-value thefts across northern Arizona.
Investigators say the group followed a semi-truck carrying expensive technology from California to a truck stop in Ash Fork off I-40. While the drivers briefly went inside the store, thieves allegedly broke into the trailer and stole up to $175,000 worth of merchandise in just 11 minutes.
Authorities say two sprinter vans were used during the heist, and investigators believe the same crew may also be connected to a separate train burglary involving shoes, electronics, and clothing days later.
Sheriff David Rhodes says organized cargo thefts like these have been increasing and could eventually impact consumers through higher prices.
The investigation remains ongoing.
