A Peoria woman is recovering after being found in a remote desert area following a crash that could have had a much worse outcome. According to police, the woman — who suffers from dementia — took her family’s SUV and went missing. Her family had placed an AirTag on the vehicle, which helped narrow down the last known location to a remote area in northern Peoria. From there, officers used additional technology to search the desert and eventually located the SUV. Authorities say the vehicle had gone over a retention wall, leaving it hidden and difficult to spot from the ground. The woman was found with minor injuries and received medical care at the scene. Police say the situation could have been far more serious if she hadn’t been found when she was. Officials credited the rescue to a combination of technology, coordination, and quick response.
