For the first time in four years, homelessness in Tucson has gone down — but it’s happening under some surprising conditions. A new 2026 report shows about 2,130 people are currently experiencing homelessness across Pima County, a roughly 4% decrease from last year. That marks the first drop since 2022. But at the same time, the area has lost nearly 200 shelter beds due to funding cuts, hotel voucher reductions, and temporary closures. Shelters that are still open are operating at extremely high capacity, with very little space available.
