Flagstaff’s dark skies are getting extra protection as ADOT prepares to install new amber LED highway lights around the city 🌌 Starting in May, the agency says it will replace 370 light fixtures along parts of Interstate 17, Interstate 40, and Route 66 in the Flagstaff area. The goal is to reduce light pollution while still keeping highway corridors illuminated. Flagstaff is internationally recognized for its dark skies, so even roadway lighting is designed with that in mind. According to ADOT, testing showed the new amber LEDs help reduce upward brightness compared to traditional lighting. ADOT says it has worked for years to limit how much highway lighting spills into the sky in the Flagstaff area, and this newest project is being done in collaboration with the City of Flagstaff and the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition.
