Visited Alcatraz Island — one of the most historic places in America. Originally built as a military fortress and later turned into one of the world’s most infamous federal prisons in 1934, Alcatraz housed criminals like Al Capone and became known for its harsh conditions and nearly impossible escapes. After the prison closed in 1963, the island was occupied by Native American activists in 1969, becoming a major symbol for Indigenous rights. In 1972, Alcatraz became part of the National Park Service and is now preserved as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. From military history to prison stories to powerful activism, this island holds so many layers of American history in one place.
