Last night, my sister Rabianasimi was elected as a Labour Councillor in London. For those unfamiliar, a councillor is an elected representative for a ward of 10–20,000 residents, like an MP, but for your neighbourhood. The people who fight for your streets, your schools, your community. But the title isn’t what makes this win extraordinary. Let me tell you what does. This is a woman who campaigned for an entire year while working full-time as a civil servant. Raising an 18-month-old daughter. And pregnant. Door after door. Street after street. Shopkeepers, residents, religious centres, community hubs — she showed up everywhere. Swollen feet. Pregnancy sickness. Nausea. Exhaustion that would have flattened most of us.
