European Union foreign ministers have agreed to issue sanctions against “violent” Israeli settlers, ending months of policy blockage. The move came alongside the recent change in Hungary’s government, which shifted the sanctions from “deadlock to delivery" , says EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas.
More than 500,000 Israelis live among 3 million Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, excluding East Jerusalem, in settlements that are illegal under international law. Last year, the expansion of Israeli settlements reached its highest level since at least 2017, according to a UN report.
Israel has responded to the EU, labelling the sanctions as “arbitrary” and asserting that Jews have the right to settle in the occupied West Bank.
