France’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier strike group is moving into the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden as Paris and the United Kingdom prepare for a potential mission to safeguard shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz.
France’s armed forces said the group crossed the Suez Canal on Wednesday, after being deployed to the eastern Mediterranean following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
France and Britain are leading plans for an international mission to protect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil passes and where shipping has been heavily disrupted by the conflict.
