I was conversing with a friend recently about our children and how different their world is from how ours was when we were growing up. I shared with her a phrase I’ve used with Summer & Cooper from toddlerhood: “We are thinking people.” One of the things I value most, and one of the skills I think is most important to model for my children, is thinking critically. Of course we as parents want to model kindness, emotional intelligence, manners, respect, etc., and all of those things matter deeply to me as well. But in an age where people are increasingly being encouraged not to think at all, both modeling what it looks like to be a thinking person and explicitly encouraging my children to be thinking people is hugely important to me.
