In honor of National Nurses Week, we’re taking a moment to shine a light on Jewish nurses who made a lasting impact. 🙌 Today, we are highlighting Lillian Wald, an American nurse, activist, and self-described “practical idealist who worked to create a more just society.” Born to a Jewish family that emigrated from Europe after the 1848 revolutions, Wald grew up in a loving, privileged home. Rather than taking that privilege for granted, she used it for change. Wald became a true powerhouse. At the turn of the 20th century, she helped bring healthcare to New York City’s Lower East Side, played a role in founding the U.S. Children’s Bureau, chaired the Red Cross campaign to combat the Spanish Flu epidemic, and championed countless public health and social justice initiatives.
