High atop only three mountain peaks in the park lives a creature found nowhere else on Earth: the Shenandoah Salamander. This ancient resident is one of the most geographically restricted vertebrates on the planet, thriving in a tiny niche bathed in cool mountain fog. Because he has no lungs, his survival depends entirely on this moisture, which allows oxygen to diffuse directly through his skin and into his bloodstream. But as a changing climate drives fog to higher altitudes, his fragile habitat is shrinking—making this federally endangered species a symbol of the park’s delicate balance. To escape the drying midday sun, the salamander retreats into the cool soil and will wait for the fog to return.
