Basketball was first introduced into the Commonwealth Games programme at Melbourne 2006. Led by one of the greatest female basketball players ever to come from England, Andrea Congreaves, England Women were in Group A with Australia, India and Mozambique. With their only loss coming against Australia (95-43) in the group stages, England progressed into the knockouts comfortably. They faced New Zealand in the semi-finals, losing 67-74.
