Public money should fund public schools. Idaho’s new private school tax credit program uses nearly $50 million in state funds for nonpublic school expenses, with up to $5,000 per student. If spent responsibly, that money could support teachers, classroom materials, extracurriculars, safer buildings, better transportation, and stronger rural schools. And let’s tell the truth: for many Idaho families, “school choice” does not exist. Many rural counties have no private school option at all, while the public school remains the backbone of the community. So when public dollars leave public schools, rural kids lose. Working families lose. Students who need support lose. I believe public funds should strengthen public education, not drain it.
