Global life expectancy has risen from around 32 years in 1900 to more than 73 years today. Life expectancy was once extremely low because millions of children died from infections, malnutrition, unsafe water, and poor sanitation before reaching adulthood. Diseases like tuberculosis, cholera, pneumonia, and smallpox were widespread, while vaccines and antibiotics did not yet exist. Advances in medicine, hygiene, nutrition, and public health transformed human survival and doubled average lifespan within just over a century.
