“Matisse: A Modern Scandal” opens THIS weekend and we will be dazzling in handmade hats 👒 “Femme au chapeau” has always been a painting that mattered—to Matisse himself, to its various owners, and to the many other who have encountered it over time, including artists. From its initial public presentation in 1905 to today, the portrait has served as a provocation and a source of inspiration. Artists have responded in their own ways, to its subject, style, and sheer audacity. The three artworks shown here alongside “Femme au chapeau” span almost seven decades and took inspiration from Matisse’s painting! Notice how Wayne Thiebaud, Kees van Dongen, and Jean Metzinger all combine non-objective color (color that doesn’t represent the natural appearance of objects) with oversized hats in portraits of women.
