I went to college and grad school in the 2010s. The last class I took in grad school (2017) was the only one I was allowed a laptop on an in-class exam. The Chem dept was so paranoid we would cheat we were allowed 1 pencil. Bags, coats, and large boots were dropped in the front of the classroom. Basically, needing anything more than a pencil was considered cheating & lazy and unworthy of advanced STEM classes. (one teacher before every test said “all you need is your pencil and your brain!!”) They spent 0 time thinking or developing guidelines on how tools like calculators can aide or hinder cognition and real learning of the subject matter.
