I was in high school when the HPV vaccine came out and was only recommended for girls then (boys now can get it too). It prevents over 90% of HPV-related cancers--a miracle vaccine! Some parents were all spouting the same BS-about how their girls were 'good' and didn't need it (ignoring that HPV can also be transmitted without intercourse). Even as a high schooler with no science degree and a PHD as only a distant spec on the horizon of my life, I knew it was BS and got the vaccine. This was in 2007 FYI too, so the anti-vax stance was super shocking. And it wasn't b/c the vaccine was new, or they were concerned with side-effects, no it was b/c they didn't want their daughters having sex. 8 years later I was in a feminist science studies class a student did a report on negative attitudes towards HPV vaccination --even then anti-vax attitudes seemed shocking. #HPVvaccine #vaccinessavelives #feministscience #academia #STEM #highereducation #collegelife #highererducation #feministsci...
