Due to Title IX, the years 1972-1985 saw a large increase in female undergraduate enrollment in STEM majors. Furthermore, aggressive outreach and recruiting campaigns aimed towards K-12 girls were successful in increasing the overall number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to women in STEM. The Society of Women Engineers which had existed since 1950 as a response to the alarming post-war decline in women in engineering, became an important engineering organization and recruitment for undergraduates.
