*New Post* Studies have shown that students’ reasons for attrition in graduate school were personal problems (relationship strains, childcare responsibilities, physical or mental health issues) departmental problems (bad advising, lack of financial support, toxic departmental politics), the “wrong fit” (institution or geographical region), or change in career. The interviewed faculty tended to take an abstract, negative tone towards students who left, and noted a distinct lack of reflection about structural issues or lack of support that students may face.
