For decades colleges resisted technology in the classroom--made us write computer code in Blue Books, banned cell phones & calculators in class, and were so paranoid about us cheating they made a student take off her rainboots before a chem exam. I only was allowed to use a laptop once in class for an exam in 2017 in a grad school teaching class. They made us feel like FAILURES for typos or missing a semicolon in a computer code but allowed us no tools as it was equated with 'cheating'. I work in academia and nitpicking and heavy critique are norms; but now they are just throwing their hands up and embracing LLMs--using them to revise manuscripts, write grants, and incorporating it into classes. This is what the systemic devaluing of humanities has wrought.
