“Ruri” •• SOLD •• Series of 12, 20cm x 20cm each Made from Japanese Indigo This color can protect you and once protected samurai during the Edo period. I spent about 3 months in Kyoto, learning about Japanese pigments and their history. That is where I learned about Aizome, also known as Japanese indigo. These pigments come from fermented indigo leaves, and has loin been valued for its beauty and protective qualities. The dye contains natural antibacterial properties. Samurai wore garments dyed with indigo under their armor because if they got cut, it helped prevent infection and repel infects. Over time Japanese indigo became a symbol of strength, humility, and everyday elegance. It colored workwear, kimonos, and textiles through Japan. This and its rich history make it a color truly unlike anything else. #art #artist #japan #indigo #japaneseindigo
