Time to retire your felt hat until September 15th because today, May 15th, is National Straw Hat Day! This day has origins back to the late 1800s. This is the day to, historically, stop wearing your felt and wool winter hats and start wearing a straw hat as the weather gets warmer. For today, Jared wore a wide brim straw hat in the print shop at the Sacramento History Museum and letterpress printed an image from a woodcut from the Lewis Winter Collection. This woodcut of a flat brim straw hat was made 125-135 years ago. Lewis Winter made a variety of woodcuts of clothing items to be used in advertising in Sacramento newspapers in the late 1880s-1890s. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #StrawHatDay #MuseumTok #learnontiktok #printing
